Apprenticeship is the recognised means by which people are trained to become craftspeople in Ireland. The main craft trades have been designated by SOLAS and come within the scope of the Statutory Apprenticeship system, which is organised in Ireland by SOLAS in co-operation with the Department of Education and Skills, employers and unions.
Apprenticeship is a demand-driven, workplace and classroom, educational and training programme for employed people aimed at developing the skills of the apprentice to meet the needs of industry and the labour market. The Curriculum for each apprenticeship programme is based on uniform, pre-specified standards which are agreed and determined by industry. On successful completion of an apprenticeship, a FETAC Advanced Certificate is awarded; this is recognised internationally as the requirement for craftsperson status.

On successful completion of an apprenticeship an apprentice is eligible for consideration for entry into related degree programmes provided by the Institutes of Technology providing he/she also meets other special entry requirements.

Blended Learning at the Training Centre

Blended Learning Courses offer a flexible way to learn.  They provide a mix of traditional classroom Instructor led workshops with enhanced online learner supports. Students are typical required to attend the Training Centre for one to two days a week and spend the rest of the time learning through a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).

This allows students to be flexible in their study whilst receiving Tutor support and access to course material 24 hours a day.  All blended learning courses are certified.

The Community Training Centres (CTCs) are aimed at early school leavers aged between 16 and 21 years, who are most in need of basic vocational training and are managed by representative community committees.
In the Midlands there are four CTCs who provide training places. The training provision is divided between  in-centre learners and linked work experience learners.  Each CTC provides a range of Major FETAC awards at level 3 and 4.  Modules available to learners include maths, science, engineering, hairdressing, catering, information technology, horticulture, social and personal skills training, literacy and numeracy.

Athlone Training Centre, in partnership with community based groups, provides a range of person centred, proactive training/job related services to assist individuals enter/re-enter the active labour market.  In addition, it aims to promote the removal of barriers and provide supports, which ensure access to programmes, services and employment for individuals and groups experiencing exclusion and labour market disadvantage.

Local Training Initiative (LTI) programmes enable Athlone Training Centre to fulfil these objectives and at the same time provide support to Community/Voluntary Organisations to address local service and development needs.  Initiatives are firmly rooted in the community and encourage people who otherwise might not avail of mainstream training to develop their existing skills and learn new skills in an environment that is tailored to their particular local needs.

The LTIs provide a range of training programmes which lead to Major FETAC awards between levels 3 and 4 primarily.
